MBCT combines simple meditation practices with cognitive therapy teachings to help people become more aware of unhelpful thoughts and feelings. This increased awareness allows us to respond more wisely, rather than reacting in habitual ways. It can thus help to build emotional resilience and is open to all individuals dealing with everyday stress.

What happens during MBCT sessions?

MBCT is a group based intervention, which runs as an 8 weeks course. Each of the 8 meetings lasts approximately 2 hours and participants are asked to partake in between-session tasks as part of the process.

Is it effective?

Clinical trials have shown that MBCT significantly cuts the chances of relapse from recurrent depression (NICE, 2009). It has also been found to be equivalent to pharmacological treatments in preventing depressive relapse (Kuyken et al. 2015).
