Supervision has two main goals: to maintain quality of performance and extend individual’s skills. “Supervision is what happens when people who work in the helping professions make a formal arrangement to think with another or others about their work with a view to providing the best possible service to clients, enhancing their own personal and professional development, and gaining support in relation to the emotional demands of the work.” (Scaife, 2001).

Professional accreditation bodies such as the BABCP and BPS have standard supervision criteria, which acts as a prerequisite for accreditation and affiliation purposes. Supervision is a safeguard to ensure safe efficacious practice towards your clients and other professionals, alongside encouraging continued personal and professional development.

Supervision will be underpinned by the following CBT principles:

  • Check in
  • Agenda setting
  • Bridge from previous supervision session
  • Process and outcome of previous cases
  • Review of homework tasks
  • Prioritisation and discussion of agenda items
  • Assignment of homework

The function of supervision is to monitor and evaluate, instruct and advise, model, consult, support and share information. Supervision affords opportunities to discuss formulation, treatment plans, progress, risk assessments and therapy endings. You might decide to develop particular CBT skills, both by role play exercises and/or by listening to tapes or watching videos. Completed sessions can be CTS-R rated (however these will be charged separately) on request. It is equally important to be reflective about your practice: the supervisor ensures emotional awareness and self-evaluation.
